I always laugh when people turn to me for advice on natural birth control options… If you know our story, you know we got married right after I graduated college at the age of 22, and we got pregnant six weeks later. So I would basically put our birth control effectiveness rating at about 0% ha! But that was 7 years ago now, and I have learned a LOT about natural birth control options since then! We’ve recently landed on using a fertility tracking method, and we use the Daysy fertility tracker! I’m really excited to share my Daysy fertility tracker review with you after using it since mid-November!

Let me give you a little backstory. I’ve always been way on the crunchier side of things, if you can’t tell by now 😉 When we got married, I knew I wanted to use THE most natural birth control option I could find. Since we got married SO young, it’s not like I had a ton of friends who had already been exploring natural birth control options and had tons of advice to give me. I HAD heard of people using a diaphragm, which is a barrier method form of birth control that goes into the woman’s body and caps the cervix.

It sounded about as natural as possible, so that’s what we decided on. Apparently, most OBGYN’s aren’t very familiar with diaphragms, so I had a hard time convincing one to even fit me for one. Once I finally got fitted for one (which just means they measure the size of your cervix), I went to pharmacy after pharmacy to fill my prescription. Apparently, not only do pharmacies in the US not carry diaphragms, but they also can’t even order one for you.

I felt totally defeated.

In this first month of marriage, we were essentially trying to do our own method of natural birth control. (Basically the Rhythm Method of Calendar Method). When I spell it out here, it kind of sounds ridiculous. Since we both hated condoms, we decided we would take my cycle length, 30 days, divide it by 2 (for when I would likely be ovulating), and use condoms six days to either side of that day. Even though you only ovulate on ONE day, your fertility window is 5-6 days because sperm can last in the body for up to 6 days. Crazy, right? So we thought our 12-day window was PLENTY.

Sure, this makes sense IF you ovulate when you think you’re going to.

I wish I could remember the specifics now, but what happened when we got pregnant with Ella was some combination of me ovulating late and his sperm lasted the MAXIMUM amount of time in my body. (Please, Lord, don’t ever let Chaz read this blog post…)

And now we have the miracle of baby Ella!

This method isn’t flawed when you use a device like Daysy to actually track your fertility window.

The flaw comes when you start trying to guess your ovulation. That’s a fast way to make a baby. Trust me.

Between kiddos, we REALLY wanted to avoid getting pregnant quickly. Apparently we are really fertile, and I already had a kiddo at 23, so we didn’t need another one too soon!

Between kiddos I got the ParaGard IUD. I basically sat in my OBGYN’s office looking at the birth control chart, and tried to find the best option that was 99.9% effective and also relatively natural. Clearly, having a foreign object in your body is not natural. But the ParaGard is just a piece of copper and doesn’t have any hormones at all. While I wouldn’t make that choice now, I think it actually was probably the best choice for us at the time.

I got my ParaGard out in December of 2014, with the hope that I would “get to know my body” so we could get pregnant in March.

I actually did finally find out how to get a diaphragm during this time… I ended up having to order it from the ONE place that has it online at Cooper Surgical. It’s a great barrier method option (you can use it as your barrier method when you’re using the Daysy fertility tracker).

There was ONE day I forgot to use my diaphragm, and we got pregnant. In January.

We had Owen in October of 2015!

After Owen we felt similarly to how we felt after we had Ella… But this time, we thought we were most likely done altogether having kiddos. I decided to get the Mirena IUD this time… The doctor at my delivery had a really different perspective on birth control. When I asked if having light or no periods was SO weird, she said “Actually, when you think about our ancestors who didn’t have birth control, most women of child-bearing age would always be either pregnant or nursing. So they actually RARELY had a period.” Since I’m all about looking back to our Paleolithic ancestors, I went for it! Six weeks after I had Owen I got the Mirena IUD.

I chose to get my IUD out in November because I got to the point that I really wasn’t a fan. I don’t think I need to say TMI at this point, but TMI warning! I started to get near vaginal yeast infections. Sounds weird to say, but they weren’t full blown yeast infections, I would just be in a constant state of discomfort. I managed these by literally wiping down with melaleuca essential oils (diluted), and that would relatively keep the situation at bay. But I just knew it was related to my Mirena IUD. Turns out, since I got my Mirena IUD out 6 months ago, I haven’t had a SINGLE day of that. Not one.

Since I got my Mirena out, I’ve been using the Daysy fertility tracker, and it is BY FAR my most favorite things we’ve tried.

Before we dive into my Daysy Fertility tracker review, let’s get some of the most common questions out of the way!

What is Daysy birth control?

Daysy is a fertility tracker that does a couple things. You monitor your temperature in the morning, and it goes into an app that helps you keep track of days that you’re fertile, not fertile, or potentially could be. Your decisions with what to do with this knowledge are different based on if you’re trying to have a baby or trying to prevent pregnancy.

Due to an intelligent algorithm based on scientific evidence, long-term experience and well-engineered technology, Daysy provides highest quality, reliability and precision in terms of fertility tracking.

Daysy’s algorithm is so accurate because it’s based on FIVE MILLION menstrual cycles and 30 years of research. These two reasons are why I believe Daysy is so accurate!

How does Daysy work?

You take your temperature every morning. You push the middle button once, and it shows you the previous day’s recording. You push it again and stick it under your tongue to get today’s results. In 30-60 seconds, you have that day’s results. With the model I have, you plug in your Daysy to your smartphone every few days to load your results into the app. The newest Daysy is Bluetooth and does it for you!

You will be given one of the following lights every day:

  • Red= possibly fertile/ fertile
  • Red flashing = predicted day of ovulation
  • Green= infertile days
  • Yellow= learning phase/ cycle fluctuation
  • Red, green, yellow flashing= possible pregnancy
  • Red, green, yellow solid= confirmed pregnancy

Why does this work? It works because women only release an egg (ovulate) ONE day of their cycle. The reason you are fertile for up to six days is because sperm can live in your body for up to six days.

Your basal temperature is your resting temperature, which is typically lower than your body’s temperature during the day. Your basal temperature rises near ovulation because of the hormone progesterone. Once you ovulate, your progesterone continues to increase, which continues to warm your basal temperature.

Daysy uses this information (and five million cycles’ worth of data) to predict with 99.3% accuracy when you ovulate. Knowing when you’re ovulating allows you to either plan or prevent a pregnancy.

Cycles differ month to month, person to person, and even within the same person. That’s why using a fertility tracker like Daysy is so important, and also why we have our Ella 😉

If you’re into reading scientific studies, this is the study that convinced me!

I personally love how easy it is to understand and use- just look at the cute package Daysy comes in that explains it step by step as you take it out of the box!

How many green days do you get in a month with Daysy?

Daysy uses get an average of 18-20 green days in a month.

How effective is Daysy?

Daysy has to forgo annual testing as a certified medical device, and the results say it’s 99.3% accurate. Since it’s technically a fertility tracker and NOT a “birth control,” they can’t claim “effectiveness as birth control.” per the FDA. The red, green, and yellow readings are 99.3% accurate and are effective for planning or preventing pregnancy.

How much is Daysy? Is Daysy worth the money?

Daysy is normally $299 (it used to be $330!) but is $284 when you use my link and get $15 off! It can last for up to 7 years! So when you break it down, that’s 84 months of a fertility tracker for $284. That’s only $3.38 a month! When you put it that way, you can see how cost effective it is! Also check below for more info on how your health insurance could help you with the cost of your Daysy.

Is Daysy covered by insurance?

Sometimes yes! Since Daysy IS a medically certified device, chances are you can get at least some money back. Most insurance companies in Europe cover the cost of Daysy. Many US insurance companies cover the cost of the Daysy fertility tracker up to 60%. Daysy is normally $284 when you use my link and get $15 off! If your insurance company covered 60%, that’s $170.40. With my $15 off, that makes it only $113.60 out of pocket.

Talking with insurance companies about more natural options like Daysy can be super confusing. Daysy is considered a fertility monitor, so you can ask your insurance company if they cover that category of device. You can ask if they cover the insurance code “A9279,” which is for a monitoring feature or unclassified device.

We’ve also had flex spending accounts (FSA) before that gave us a certain amount that we can spend toward health-related expenses. Since Daysy IS a medically certified device, you could use your FSA money towards the cost of the device.

How early can Daysy detect pregnancy?

Daysy can detect pregnancy as early as 15 days after ovulation. If Daysy thinks you may be pregnant, it will show you blinking red, green, and yellow lights. A confirmed pregnancy can happen as early as 19 days after ovulation and is displayed as solid red, yellow, and green lights.

How long does Daysy last?

The device itself will last for approximately 7 years!

Does Daysy work with irregular cycles?

Most likely! Daysy can recognize cycles between 19 and 40 days. The more your cycle fluctuates, you may get more yellow or red days than someone with a normal cycle. If you have questions about your cycle, reach out to the customer service team at Daysy!

My Official Daysy Fertility Tracker Review

I’ve always wanted to be more familiar with my cycle and what is happening in my body, and Daysy has 100% brought me that knowledge.

In the first couple months, you get a lot of yellow lights while Daysy is figuring out your cycle. Once it has tracked a few cycles, you get more and more green lights! During this “figuring out” phase, you can use a barrier method the entire month, until you feel comfortable enough to have unprotected sex on your green days.

Now I have SO much confidence in Daysy. You can see the last few months of my tracking below… It has really figured out my cycle and we get a ton of green days!

I keep my Daysy right next to my bed on my bedside. When I wake up, the first thing I do is use my Daysy to take my temperature. Getting up can change your body temperature, so it’s important to take it right when you wake up and before you sit up or get out of bed.

I personally LOVE that you could use Daysy to plan a pregnancy or to prevent a prevent pregnany!

To plan a pregnancy with Daysy, you have unprotected sex on your red or flashing red days.

To prevent a pregnancy, you use a barrier method of birth control on your yellow, red, and flashing red days. You can safely have unprotected sex on your green days. My favorite barrier methods are the diaphragm I mentioned that you can get online at Cooper Surgical and L. Condoms that are Glycerin and Paraben-free!

My Daysy Charts

You can see it took me a little longer than normal to start getting more greens. This is because I had the Mirena IUD in, that basically eliminates cycles altogether. Once I started tracking my cycles, I got a TON more green days!

You can also see in my Daysy charts below that it can even predict your cycle and ovulation up to two months in advance! Isn’t that amazing!?

I love that with Daysy, there isn’t anything foreign in my body, and there are ZERO hormones. Now that I’ve used it for six months and trust it so much, I wish we had used it from the beginning and between and after babies.

Once we got my IUD out and started using Daysy, it actually spurred on even more conversation between me and Chaz. Since we knew we didn’t want more kiddos, we actually decided Chaz would get a vasectomy. He got one in January. You know the funniest part? I’m still using my Daysy every. single. day. Why? Because I truly love knowing what’s going on with my body! It can tell me when I’m ovulating, and I especially love knowing the exact day my cycle is coming.

Even with a permanent birth control option like a vasectomy, I still love using Daysy. I feel like that should be a pretty big testament to how great it is!! 🙂
