Today, we’re talking all about french fries! Specifically, Whole30 approved oven baked french fries…
The secret is out! Do you know that white potatoes are included in the list of Whole30 approved foods? The original Whole30 rules (and book It Starts with Food) said no to white potatoes… The rules changed in July of 2014 with the release of their edited and slightly reworked book! Still, some people haven’t heard the news that white potatoes are a-ok for the Whole30 program, and I just love spreading the news 😉
The funny thing is we actually did a Whole30 in June of 2014 right before the new book came out!! We were jealous of all you white potato eaters 🙂 BUT I can’t even tell you the happy dance I did when I heard the news!! So many of you have asked me about white potatoes versus sweet potatoes and if it’s okay to use white potatoes once in a while and the answer is YES! Have you ever tried a Japanese sweet potato?? They’re deep red on the outside and cream colored on the inside! They taste like a hybrid between a sweet potato and a regular potato – yum!!
Oven Baked French Fries v Conventional, Restaurant, Deep Fried French Fries
Once of my favorite ways to eat potatoes is in oven baked french fry form – and they’re incredibly easy to make at home! While conventionally-cooked (deep fried) french fries are NOT allowed on your Whole30, you can totally make your own in the oven, and this variety is totally Whole30 Approved. These oven baked french fries are essentially roasted potatoes. Not deep fried in oils that aren’t good for you… There’s a huge difference! I made these using Japanese sweet potatoes, but any potato variety would be equally delicious.Print
- 3 potatoes, julienned (any variety)
- Olive oil for coating
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with foil.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine julienned potatoes, a drizzle of olive oil, and salt and pepper. Mix well.
- Place potatoes onto the baking sheet and bake for 20 minutes.
- Mix fries and bake for another 20 minutes or until crispy.
- Serve hot!

PS: Another one of my favorite pairings is oven baked fries + pesto mayo! (Blend 1/4 cup basil and 2 tablespoons pine nuts and add to a batch of mayo.)
