If you are new to plant-based eating and unfamiliar with edamame, we’ll give you the basics and provide a list of Plant-Based Whole30 edamame brands to add to your shopping lists.

Whole30 has recently launched their Plant-Based Whole30 Program and that means that plant-based protein sources such as edamame, tofu and tempeh are allowed for consumption of sufficient protein.

What is Edamame?

Edamame beans are young soybeans. Sold most often in their shells, you can also find them shelled and fresh or frozen. Packed with protein (1 cup of cooked edamame contains 18 grams of protein!) and rich in vitamins and minerals, edamame is a plant-based nutritional powerhouse.

Is Edamame Whole30 compliant?

Yes and No. Edamame is approved only for the Plant-Based Whole30 program (click here for the rules!). All soy products are banned from the traditional Whole30 program. (click here for the rules!)

How do I prepare Edamame?

One of the most popular ways to prepare edamame is to steam fresh or frozen beans in their pods. Once they are done steaming, sprinkle with sea salt and put one edamame pod in your mouth, slide out the edamame beans with your teeth, and discard the pods. (They’re compostable!). You can also remove the steamed beans from their pods or purchase them already shelled (shelled edamame is often called mukimame), and add them to salads, soups, stews, veggie bowls, and zoodle dishes.

What to look out for when finding Plant-Based Whole30 Edamame Brands:

As mentioned in previous posts about soy products, we recommend that you purchase organic (and Non-GMO) edamame as most soybeans grown in the US are genetically modified. In fact, the FDA states that “in 2018, GMO soybeans made up 94% of all soybeans planted.” (source)

We only list a few edamame brands below, because we personally believe it is that important to eat organic soy. As a reminder, any food that is certified organic cannot be GMO (a genetically modified organism).
